I’ve lived in Marbella for 15 years, and I’ve lost count of the business owners who’ve told me “I tried an agency once, it was a waste of money.” Some of them were right. (Some of them gave it six weeks and a €50 ad budget, but that’s another story.)
There’s usually a moment when business owners in Marbella start asking whether a marketing agency is worth it. You’re busy, things feel stuck, and you’re not sure if paying someone will actually change anything.
Is hiring a marketing agency worth the money?
Hiring a marketing agency is worth it when the extra customers it brings in are worth more than what you pay, and when it frees up your time to run the business. If it can’t do either of those things, it isn’t worth it, however good the reports look.
That sounds obvious. But so many people sign up with an agency without ever working out what “worth it” means for them. So before you hire anyone, write down two numbers: how much a new customer is worth to you, and how many hours a week you currently spend on marketing.
When does an agency pay for itself?
An agency pays for itself when it wins you enough new business to cover its fee, usually within three to six months. For a lot of Marbella businesses, that’s fewer customers than you’d think.
Say you run an aesthetics clinic and an average client spends €800 a year with you. If an agency costs €1,200 a month, you need roughly two new regular clients a month for it to pay off. Anything above that is profit. For an estate agent, one extra sale or rental can cover a whole year of marketing.
But for a café or a small shop with a low average spend, the maths is tighter. That’s not a reason not to market, it just means you need cheaper, more focused help.
What are the signs you need marketing help?
You probably need help if you’re posting when you remember, you’ve tried ads and “they didn’t work”, your competitors keep popping up on Google and you don’t, or you get enquiries but have no idea where they came from.
The other big one in Marbella is language and audience. Lots of local businesses are brilliant at serving Spanish customers but struggle to reach English-speaking expats, second-home owners and visitors (or the other way round). If your marketing only speaks to half your market, you’re leaving money on the table.
When is hiring an agency NOT worth it?
It isn’t worth it if your business has bigger problems than marketing. If your service is inconsistent, your reviews are poor or you can’t handle more customers, more marketing will just get more people to notice the problem.
It’s also not worth it if you’re not willing to give the agency anything. The best results I’ve had with clients came when they sent me photos, answered questions and told me what customers were saying. Agencies can’t make things up about your business (well, the good ones won’t).
Is a Marbella agency better than one in the UK or online?
A local agency understands the Marbella market in a way a remote one usually doesn’t: the seasons, the mix of nationalities, which areas your customers live in, and which local Facebook groups actually matter. That local knowledge shows up in better targeting and less wasted ad spend.
That said, being local isn’t enough on its own. Plenty of agencies here are run by lovely people who have never run a profitable ad campaign. Ask to see real results from businesses like yours, ideally on the Costa del Sol.
What results should I expect in the first few months?
In the first three months you should see a clear plan, better-looking channels, your tracking set up properly, and early signs of more enquiries. Big jumps in sales usually come later, especially with SEO.
For example, with International School Estepona we rebuilt their Google Ads and saw a 1,000% increase in click-through rate. That didn’t happen in week one. It came from testing, fixing and testing again.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a marketing agency in Marbella cost?
Most charge between €500 and €2,500 a month depending on the services, plus ad spend. Ask for a written list of what’s included before you compare prices.
Can I just do my own marketing instead?
Yes, if you’ve got the time and you enjoy it. Many owners do their own social media and hire help only for ads or SEO, which can be the best of both.
How do I know if my agency is doing a good job?
You should get a clear monthly report showing enquiries, leads or sales, not just likes and followers. If you can’t tell whether things are improving, ask.
How long should I give an agency before deciding?
Give it at least three months for ads and social media, and six months for SEO. Anything shorter and you’re judging before there’s enough data.
