9 Marketing Mistakes Marbella Businesses Should Avoid

I’ve been doing marketing on the Costa del Sol for over a decade, and I’ve seen the same mistakes again and again. Not from bad businesses. From really good ones that were just too busy, or got the wrong advice.

Here are the ones I’d fix first, and how to avoid them.

What are the most common marketing mistakes?

The most common marketing mistakes are posting inconsistently, not tracking where customers come from, spreading a small budget across too many channels, replying to enquiries too slowly, and giving up before campaigns have had time to work. Most of them cost nothing to fix.

Mistake 1: Switching everything off in winter

This is the big Marbella one. The season ends, things go quiet, and everything stops. Then in spring, you’re starting from zero while competitors who kept going are already ahead. Use the quiet months to build content, reviews and SEO.

Mistake 2: Only marketing to one audience

Marbella is a mix of Spanish locals, expats from all over Europe, second-home owners and visitors. If your website, posts and ads only work for one group, you’re missing a lot of potential customers. At the very least, know who your best customers are and speak to them clearly.

Mistake 3: Boosting posts and calling it advertising

The “boost post” button is tempting, but it gives you very little control over who sees your ad or what they do next. Proper campaigns in Meta Ads Manager, with a clear goal and audience, almost always do better for the same money.

Mistake 4: Not knowing where customers come from

If you don’t know whether your last customer came from Google, Instagram or a friend, you can’t do more of what’s working. Ask every new customer “how did you find us?” and write it down. It’s free and it’s brilliant.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Google Business Profile

So many Marbella businesses have a Google profile with old opening hours, three blurry photos and unanswered reviews. It’s often the first thing people see, and it’s completely free to fix. (It’s one of the quickest wins I do for new clients.)

Mistake 6: Replying to enquiries too slowly

Someone messages you on Instagram at 9pm asking for a price. You reply two days later. By then they’ve booked with someone else. In Marbella, people expect fast replies, especially on WhatsApp. Speed often wins over price.

Mistake 7: Spamming the local Facebook groups

Local Facebook groups can bring you great customers, but posting the same advert in dozens of groups every day gets you ignored or removed. Pick the few groups your customers actually use, follow their rules, and post like a helpful person, not a billboard.

Mistake 8: Choosing the cheapest option

Cheap marketing often ends up expensive. A €150-a-month social media package that posts generic Canva graphics won’t win you customers, so it’s €150 wasted every month. Pay for results, not for activity.

Mistake 9: Giving up too soon

Ads need a few weeks to learn. Social media needs a few months. SEO can take most of a year. I’ve seen so many businesses stop just before things were about to work. Set a realistic timeline at the start and stick to it.

What’s the real cost of bad marketing?

The real cost of bad marketing isn’t just the money you spend. It’s the customers you didn’t win, the time you lost, and the damage to how people see your brand. A tired, inconsistent online presence quietly tells people you might be tired and inconsistent too.

How do I fix my marketing mistakes?

Start with the free fixes: update your Google Business Profile, ask happy customers for reviews, reply faster, and track where customers come from. Then pick one or two channels and do them properly before adding more.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the biggest marketing mistake small businesses make?

Inconsistency. Posting a lot for a few weeks, then nothing for months, makes it hard to build trust or see what works.

Is it a mistake to market only on social media?

It can be. Social media is great for trust, but people searching on Google are often closer to buying. Most businesses need both.

Should I stop marketing in the quiet season?

Not completely. Reduce ad spend if you need to, but keep posting, collecting reviews and working on SEO so you’re ready for the busy months.

How do I know if my marketing is failing?

If enquiries aren’t improving after three to six months and you can’t see where customers come from, something needs to change.
